What is it?
Wai’alae Iki
In ancient times, there was no Kahala, but rather two Wai’alae land divisions, Wai’alae Nui (large) and Wai’alae Iki (small). It remained this way until about 100 years ago when the term “Kahala”, meaning amberjack fish, was used to refer to the beach-lined coastal region of Wai’alae. Modern times have carried on the new name, thus solidifying Kahala as an Oahu region.
Today, Wai’alae Iki, the southernmost of the two Wai’alae wedges of the Ko’olau Mountains that lie mauka (inland) of Kahala, is a lovely bedroom neighborhood in East Honolulu, capped by a gated neighborhood. Many homes in Wai’alae Iki rival any for “breathtaking” viewplane on Oahu.
