What is it?

Capitol District

The Capitol District has, in so many ways, been in existance since, well, Hawaii. The overthrown Hawaiian monarchy built Iolani Palace in 1882 and the district, in the minds of those living there, blossomed around it. When the newest US state built its capitol building in the same neighborhood in 1969, the district all but insured its place in history. It was officially added to the US registry of historic districts on Dec 1, 1978.

Today, the Capitol District is the seat of state government and a popular place for visitors and locals alike to take a regular walking tour. Set aside half a day and visit the Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site & Archives, Kawaiaha’o Church & King Lunalilo Mausoleum, King Kamehameha Statue & Ali’iolani Hale, ‘Iolani Palace & Barracks, Hawaii State Art Museum, St Andrews Cathedral, Washington Place, Hawaii State Capitol & Queen Lili’uokalani Statue, and the Hewn Stones of Umi.
