Go Green-ish
We’ve all heard it, ad nauseum, “Reduce – Reuse – Recycle.” It’s practical wisdom and easily accomplished…when you have time to plan ahead. But what if you don’t? Well, while Recycle has definitely held the spotlight from the beginning, the other two are no less important or impactful. What does this have to do with Apt 4? In 1983, Allan Renton, following the convensions of the day, built this 4-unit complex and adorned it with treasures ripped from the earth. The result was this stunning collection of oceanfront homes…each a time capsule of Hawaii.
Here you will find extensive use of Hawaiian koa, harvested from the islands’ now rare, old-growth forests. The two chimney stacks, shared between the 4 units are surrounded on all sides by corals mined on Oahu’s west side. It’s even rumored that the “natural swimming pool” you’ll see in front of you as you look down on its sandy bottom from the lanai was likely created by blasting the reef with dynamite (in the 50s, long before this home was built). It was a different time. And while some might find it sad that these beautiful, natural bounties are no longer available, we can hope that no one will ignore that they most certainly hold the history of Hawaii.
Living in a home abounding in and surrounded by precious, historic materials and features is both a privilege and an opportunity. The respect afforded this home is clear from the moment you walk in. Nothing has been left without tending. The koa still glistens. The corals…well…they are pretty much resistant to everything that an oceanfront enviroment can throw at them.

history repeating

When you visit, take a moment to appreciate these beautiful, irreplacable features. For, it is true, you could not build this home in this way today. As you enter, look left into the home office. You’ll no doubt want to sit down at the desk and be captivated by the Pacific Ocean, now visible in front of you thru the recently added pass-thru windows. And as you sit, reflect on the floor-to-ceiling all-koa library with hemicircumferential built-in storage counter. It is a stately koa presence that sets a motif you will find echoed throughout the home.
These priceless finishes had material value when they were installed and that value has, by material scarcity, only increased over time. More than most, the new owner of this home will be investing in the original Hawaii.

In The Details
In this section, we will hep you to a mind-bending number of groovy deets that make this home all that and a bag of chips. Large, hi-res versions of these detail images, and many more, are available in the HD photo gallery, linked further down the page.

Tired?
Sure you could take the stairs, but then again, you could also let your home offer you a lift from the garage into the East Wing.

Gas Fireplace
OK, OK, you will likely never need this, but should you wish to recreate a Norman Rockwell painting…you can. PLUS, it looks nice.

Guests Only
With the popular Pacific as your backyard, it’s nice to remind passersby with a locked gate that this is private property.

The Big Guns
Wolf® – SubZero® – Samsung® – these brands need no introduction except to say, “Dey in da house!”

Solid as a rock
Stone is reliable. Granite is both reliable and beautiful. It’s what kitchen islands were made for.

Fame of Thrones
If cleanliness is next to godliness, well, we’ve got you covered there too with 100% bidet-enabled Toto® washlets. (Hawaii’s reigning monarch of washlets.)

now that's hot
The jetted tub in the owner’s suite aught to do the trick with some effervescence; bubbles with or without bubblebath.

Dual Delivery
The showers here are equipped with both a rainshower and a shower wand. The wand mounts like a typical showerhead if that is what you prefer.

Travertine & Glass
Beautiful, durable, & easy to keep clean with just the swipe of a squeege after each shower.

Take a load off
The foldable teak seat in the shower makes routines like shaving both more ergonomic and safer.

Don't be knotty
Old growth koa abounds here. It’s hard to find anymore but easy to spot when you look around here. It’s basically everywhere you see finely finished wood.

Warm and soft
With tile being so trendy in 2020, wall-to-wall is a welcomed change. Your feet and back will thank you for the quality padded carpet. Your eyes will thank you for the style.

Coral
Straight from the original owner’s coral quarry, what could frame the Pacific view better than this fireplace chimney surround?

Dimmable Natural Light
Power shades on the lanai allow you to regulate both light and heat.

IMPROV ON A THEME
The sculpted tile backsplash of the lanai’s wet bar is both textural and evocative of the waves you hear here.

Chill Out
An automated ice maker? How handy. And a wine fridge beside it? We could almost live entirely on this lanai.

Circulation
New ceiling fans on the lanai keep the air moving for those rare days where the tropical air is still.

Good Timing
The hallway skylights here have shades on timers. They can be programmed to automatically extend/retract based on the amount of light/heat that you experience throughout the day.

Leave your keys
Many entrances of this home can be programmed with key codes to unlock. No more keys scratching up your surfboard.

Safety first
Both the property and the home are wired with various security features. We’ll keep them to ourselves here and tell you in person when you visit.

A Look Outside
Indoor/outdoor living. Tropical landscaping. Gate-to-stairs-to-ocean. Swim. Surf. SUP. Kayak. Transpacific Yacht Race.
Are you looking for a home to which you can swim in celebration every year after you & your crew win the Transpacific Yacht Race? Or are the Disneys next door, founders of the race, just dear friends of yours with whom you watch the race every year? Perhaps you are looking for a home with immediate oceanfront access. Or do you just want to live in the quiet residential neighborhood between all of the best that Oahu has to offer at both Waikiki & Kahala.
You can have the best of Hawaiian indoor/outdoor living here. Who can deny the benefits of condo living? Condos minimize and distribute the unending demands/expenses of maintenance that plague the owners single family homes, pools, and landscaped property. Then there is the reality that lots of space can quickly become too much space that sits unused, collecting dust.
But there can be drawbacks to buying a condo in typical condo-zoned neighborhoods, like Kaka’ako…endless noise, traffic, sirens, etc. Plus, now we have coronavirus. People are leaving condos in droves to increase physical distancing, if only by avoiding sharing an elevator.
SOLUTION: a 4-unit waterfront condo on the slopes of iconic Diamond Head crater. All of the benefits of condo living and none of the drawbacks. Now that’s what we call a win-win. Time to kick back on the couch and take the W!
